It's December 31st - already!
When I was young I always thought adults were exaggerating when they talked about how quickly time flew. Now that I'm the adult I find myself saying the same thing.
The time between Winter and Summer is still so long to me, but it's Autumn before I know it and then it's Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas right on top of one another...and then, astonishingly, another new year. Here we are again, and again I'm thinking "Really? Already?"
That's one reason that one of my resolutions last year was to journal - so I can remember more, even when time is flying.
It's time for setting resolutions again. I've been thinking quite a lot about it this year already. I try to narrow it down to just 3 or 4 goals, although each can have several parts.
I like to take a look at last years goals before I officially set any new goals to see just how I did. New Years Eve seems like an appropriate time to reflect, doesn't it?
Last year I resolved the following (cut and pasted from my 2007 Resolutions Word document, lol)
Journal!!!
Start a journal for myself - get Asher’s caught up and start writing in Tessa’s again. Write in mine at least once a week and in the kids for any major event or milestone (or at least once a month.) I think I did a pretty good job meeting these goals. Granted, I didn't start the journal until November, but I've done a decent job of keeping up with it! It's also a bit different than what I originally envisioned, but it's okay to adapt, right?
Play more!!!
Stop focusing so much on what needs to be done (cleaning the house!) and spend more time each day playing with Tessa. Use the Suncrest pool this summer, renew the zoo membership, and be sure to take lots of pictures of my babies having fun! We spent a lot of time this year playing. We went to the park a couple times a week all through the Spring and until it got too hot this Summer. We went to the zoo several times this year. Tessa took swim lessons twice a week all summer and we often stayed after to play at the pool. We had a playdate every week with Isabella. I feel like I did a pretty good job of being a "fun" mom this year and I intend to keep it up.
Weight loss!!!
Lose the last 12 pounds of this pregnancy weight by February 14. Part of this resolution is to get back to working out every day until this goal is met. After that I can go back to every other day.
Have a clear goal of how much more - if any - I’d like to lose after hitting pre-pregnancy weight by March 1.
Done - although not in the exact time frame I mentioned I DID hit my pre-pregnancy weight plus lose a couple extra pounds and maintain that loss. Since then I have re-evaluated and this year I have yet another weight loss goal to meet.
Weekend Away!!!
One long weekend with Matt away from both kids. 2 nights with Grandma will not kill Asher. Vegas or Wendover or even Park City. With friends or without - but no kids!
We did NOT get a weekend away, although we did send the kids to spend the night with grandma 3 or 4 times, so I feel pretty good about having met this goal.
So there it is. My attempts at self improvement, in a nutshell.
New Years Resolutions are very cliche in a way. But in another way I think they are very appropriate. I don't want to be a stagnant person - self improvement, setting goals is important to me. And it feels right to set goals at the beginning of a new year.
I want to be a better person, I think there's always room to do better. If there's a deeper meaning to life I think it's to develop relationships with people, to love as many as you can, and to improve on what you are.
Wow - I'm philosophical this morning!
I'm going to wait to post my new goals until tomorrow - which may be a mistake considering the party we'll be throwing tonight!!! If I'm too busy tomorrow recovering I'll be sure to post my goals on January 2, but I think I'll be okay to do it on the 1st.
More later!
