Magic Oven

For her Birthday (almost 5 months ago!) Tessa received a Disney Princess Cool-Bake Magic Oven.
She was delighted.
I, however, took one look at the thing and wanted to cry. I HATE toys like these.  Toys that not only require my constant and extremely vigilant supervision, but also what amounts to more time setting up and cleaning up than actual play time.
So the oven has sat in the closet for months. And Tessa asks to play with it constantly. Then I say no, feeling like a bad mom. Then she puts on her pouty face and stomps off to her bedroom to listen to her very own Ipod and play with her millions of dollars worth of barbies or dollies or on her laptop. Because life is TOUGH for my 7 year old.

Anyway, last Sunday she asked again. Ash had just gone down for his nap, I had just finished my workout and was ready to get in the shower.  Football was on and Matt was laying on the couch, nursing a nasty cold. So I said no - again.
Then daddy (and his been-out-of-town-for-ages-and-ages guilt) came to the rescue, and he said he'd do it with her.

Oh! the JOY on this childs face!

The oven is weird. It's not like an Easy Bake Oven (which I actually MIGHT have let her play with before 5 months had passes - purely for my own nostalgia) but instead it "bakes" with ice.
Matt read the instructions, which say to mix the little packets with warm water - QUICKLY.
He said before they started that he thought the "food" was going to be similar to dehydrated camping type meals, and the ice oven was to make it set up.
Sure enough, the "cake batter" was grossly thick and solid, and the main difference after taking it out of the oven was that it had a more rubbery consistency.
It looked SICK to our adult eyes, but Tessa was enchanted.
She wrote a note to daddy while the cake was "baking" that said
Dear Daddy,
Thank you for letting me use my oven. I love you very much. If the cake is good I will share one with you.
Love, Tessa
She's such a performer. THRIVES before an audience.

Before they started they had to make ice in the tiny ice cube tray that the oven comes with. By the time it was ready Ash was up from his nap and I was out to photograph the process.  Here are the pictures - there are a ton - I couldn't resist putting up the whole series, they were too fun not to.

Ash wouldn't touch the cakes (can you blame him?!) but he did eat some sprinkles. He'll never turn down pure sugar.

Katelyn got the same Disney cool bake oven for Christmas a couple years ago (not from us!) and she was the same way. Totally excited and loving the whole process. It looked so weird when it was ready but she and Tanner ate it like it was the best treat in the whole world!! Kids are so funny.
